Having the Right Job Requirements is Better than More Requirements

One recurring theme across data center hiring today is that many delays are not necessarily caused by a lack of candidates. More often, they are caused by a mismatch between expectations and the realities of the market.
A recent search highlighted this clearly.
A client rejected one of the most sought-after candidates in the market due to perceived gaps in experience. The challenge was that the candidate was already regarded by multiple operators and developers as one of the stronger available profiles in that function and geography.
At a certain point, the issue is no longer about market competitiveness or candidate availability. It becomes a question of whether the expectations themselves are realistic.
This is becoming increasingly important as AI infrastructure projects scale globally and demand for experienced development, engineering, construction, and operations leaders continues rising. Many companies are trying to hire for highly specific combinations of hyperscale experience, regional exposure, technical specialization, leadership capability, and project scale simultaneously, while expecting immediate availability and strong commercial alignment.
In cases, those profiles simply do not exist in meaningful numbers.
The most successful hiring processes are usually the ones where there is early clarity around:
- what is truly non-negotiable,
- where flexibility exists,
-which capabilities can realistically be developed over time
That clarity allows companies to move decisively on strong candidates rather than restarting searches repeatedly while critical projects remain under-resourced.
If hiring processes are extending longer than expected or strong candidates are consistently being rejected, one of the first steps may be reassessing the requirements and introducing flexibility where appropriate.
