How to Prepare for a Data Center Interview.
Interviews in this sector test two things: whether you have really done the work, and whether you can be trusted with live infrastructure. Prepare to prove both.
Research the Company and Its Pipeline
Know what the company builds or runs, where its sites are, and what it has announced recently. An operator expanding into a new region, a developer waiting on grid connection and a contractor chasing a handover date all hire for different reasons.
- Read recent press releases and project announcements.
- Look up the sites near the role: size, stage and power situation.
- Check the LinkedIn profiles of the people interviewing you.
Prepare Three Project Stories
Pick three projects that show your best work and practise telling each in about two minutes. Use a simple order: the situation, what you were responsible for, what you did, and the measurable result.
Include at least one story where something went wrong and how you handled it. Interviewers in critical infrastructure value calm problem-solving more than a perfect record.
Expect Technical Depth
Technical interviewers will push past headline answers to see what you personally did. Be ready to talk through details in your area.
- Engineering: power distribution, UPS and generator design, cooling approaches, redundancy levels.
- Construction: programme management, long-lead equipment, contractor coordination, safety.
- Commissioning: test levels, integrated systems testing, handover documentation.
- Operations: maintenance strategy, incident response, change control, SLAs.
- Development and energy: site selection, grid applications, permitting, PPAs.
Questions Worth Asking
Good questions show you understand the business. They also help you decide whether the role is right for you.
- What does success look like in the first six months?
- Which projects or sites will I work on first, and what stage are they at?
- How is the team structured, and where are the current gaps?
- What is the biggest risk to the current build programme?
Senior and Executive Interviews
For leadership roles, expect conversations about strategy, commercial results and people. Come ready to discuss how you have grown a team, managed a P&L, worked with investors or boards, and made decisions under schedule pressure.
After the Interview
Send a short thank-you note the same day. If you are working with a recruiter, give honest feedback quickly, including any concerns about the role or pay. It is far easier to solve problems early than at offer stage.
Questions
Frequently Asked Questions.
What are common data center interview questions?
Expect questions on the projects you have delivered, how you handled a critical incident or schedule slip, redundancy and reliability in your discipline, safety practice, and why you want to work for that company specifically.
How should I talk about salary in an interview?
Know your market rate before you start. If asked early, give a realistic range based on research. Working through a specialist recruiter means they can handle that conversation for you.
How do I prepare for a video interview?
Test your camera, sound and connection beforehand, use a quiet and neutral background, and keep notes on your three project stories nearby. Treat it with the same seriousness as an in-person meeting.
How many interview rounds should I expect?
Usually two to four: a screening call, a technical or hiring manager interview, and a final meeting with senior leaders. Executive roles may add a presentation or board-level conversation.
